Everywhere we go, we interact with advertising initiatives and marketing strategies: when we read an advert on the train, decide to buy a laptop, or when we surf the internet. Advertising and marketing is constantly evolving and changing to reflect new developments in media, making it a truly exciting and dynamic industry to work in.
Advertising agencies conducts research, plans and creates adverts for companies. Creativity is a big word in advertising, ‘creatives’ (the Don Drapers of the advertising world) dream up the ‘big ideas’ that the art directors and copywriters put into action. It isn’t all about creativity; the advertising industry depends on people, such as advertising account executives, to handle research, strategy, administration and to keep clients happy.
Businesses nowadays are all about marketing; many companies have their own dynamic in-house marketing teams. Marketing is all about promoting goods and services of a company, through strategy, planning, communication and networking. A marketing executive’s job is to deliver successful and innovative marketing campaigns that appeal to consumers, whilst at the same time assessing the effectiveness of the company’s marketing drive. If you are organised, creative and a strategic thinker then marketing might just be the career for you!
As advertising and marketing is such a broad sector, there’s a variety of skills needed for different roles. Many roles require great written and verbal communication skills, creativity and an outgoing and congenial personality. A good degree in any discipline is usually required, although some companies prefer candidates with degrees in business management, advertising, marketing, public relations, communications or similar vocational subjects. For the more artistic roles, a degree in visual arts or graphics might be useful. It’s a competitive business so building up a portfolio of varied work experience will put you ahead in the game.
