Teach First
Learning to lead
Teach First transforms outstanding graduates into inspiring leaders, ready to excel in business, public service and not-for-profit careers. Combining intensive teacher training and experience with innovative business and management skills development, Teach First is a unique opportunity both to be different and to make a difference.
Leadership for life
By training and working as teachers for two years you will gain skills and experience that transfer directly to other careers. Teach First participants become motivators, communicators, team builders and, above all, highly employable leaders.
High-profile recruiters from all sectors recognise that the skills and strategies developed in the classroom are highly relevant and applicable to management careers. That's why over 80 companies, government agencies and public bodies back Teach First to develop top talent for the future. Put simply, if you can engage, manage and stimulate a class full of under-performing teenagers, you can handle pretty well any situation in any business.
Intensive training
Initially you will attend six weeks of intensive education training at one of the UK's leading teacher-training institutions. Then you will be assigned to a school, depending on its needs and your subject background. At the end of year one you will achieve Qualified Teacher Status - a qualification that means you can return to the teaching in the future if you wish. In tandem with your teaching role, you will contribute to the extracurricular life of your school and its students, and participate in an innovative programme of courses in strategy, marketing and finance, and skills master classes. You will also have the opportunity to attend regular networking events with industry leaders and benefit from the support of a network of experienced advisers and coaches.
Joining Teach First, which is a registered charity, means spending two years teaching in a challenging London, Greater Manchester or Midlands school, preparing and delivering real lessons to real pupils. That's not easy and you will have to be an extraordinary person to deal with the challenges presented by a class of young people who feel that the system is letting them down. But if Teach First is uniquely demanding, it is also uniquely satisfying. Few other options offer the same degree of genuine responsibility so early. And rarely, if ever, will you have the opportunity to make such a direct and important difference. And after Teach First? When you graduate from the programme you will join a select group, the Teach First Ambassadors, and benefit from ongoing networking events and contacts with supporter organisations as well as the opportunity to continue making a difference in addressing educational disadvantage. And whether you choose finance, management, public service or education, you will stand out as an exceptional individual with something special to offer.
