University of Manchester
The University of Manchester is Britain's largest and most popular university, with a distinguished history and an ambitious agenda for the future. Our mission is to become one of the top 25 universities in the world by 2015 and the preferred destination for the best students, teachers and researchers from across the world. The Times Higher Education Supplement named us 'Higher Education Institution of the Year' in 2005, and in 2006 we became the Sunday Times "University of the Year".
Our campus is a mini-metropolis just 15 minutes walk from Manchester city centre. Everything that you would expect is here - lecture theatres, laboratories and welfare services - as well as sports facilities and dozens of bars and shops. The Students' Union is the hub of student life on campus, with its own shops, cafes, bars and four live gig venues, including the famous Manchester Academy. Sports facilities include various gyms, fitness suites and the magnificent Manchester Aquatics Centre, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
The university teaches more subjects than almost any other British university, so there's plenty of scope for choice. Our four faculties cover a great variety of courses in the Humanities, Life Sciences, Engineering & Physical Sciences and Medical & Human Sciences, from Archaeology to Zoology. Our high standards in teaching go hand-in-hand with the University's status as a leading research institution, with all of our schools scoring at least 4 out of 5 in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
The University of Manchester is committed to attracting and supporting the very best students. If you have the talent, we want to ensure that you have the opportunity to study here regardless of your financial circumstances. The University has made a multi-million pound investment in a range of scholarships and bursaries to support you throughout your studies. Our bursaries provide guaranteed financial support of up to £1,000 per year for all UK students with an annual household income of £27,120 (07/08 level) or less. Our scholarships recognise outstanding academic achievement and provide financial awards worth up to £5,000 per year for the very best students from the UK and overseas. When your time here is over, you can look forward to the best possible start to your career. Employers recognise the value of a degree from Manchester and as a graduate your job prospects will be second to none. It helps to have the best advice when choosing the right job, so you will be encouraged to learn that employers and students consistently vote our University Careers Service the best in the UK. Advice and assistance with part-time or graduate job interviews and applications is available to you from the moment you step onto campus and up to 3 years after your graduation.
Manchester is often dubbed the student city of the UK - there are around 80,000 students studying in the city and you'll soon feel the benefits of this - affordable travel, student discounts at most restaurants and shops and a young, vibrant atmosphere. Choose The University of Manchester and you'll be living and studying in the fastest growing and, arguably, the most exciting city in the UK.
