Founded in 1895 and a University since 1966, Aston is an established, "old" University known for world class Teaching Quality and Research and a Graduate Employment record that is consistently the best in the UK, with strong links with industry, government and commerce.
All of the University's academic, social and accommodation facilities are based on our attractive, self contained green Campus, right in the centre of Birmingham, one of Europe's liveliest and welcoming cities. We are proud of our close-knit, safe and friendly campus atmosphere which provides the perfect environment for academic success and a fantastic social life. Aston is ranked in the top 20 UK Universities in both the Times and Guardian 2007 University Guides (out of all 120 Institutions).
Aston University offers over 300 courses at Undergraduate (first degree) and Postgraduate level (Masters and PhD Research programmes) coupled with a thriving research culture across a wide range of disciplines.
Just over 70% of our undergraduate students opt to take a sandwich year as an integrated part of their course, therefore gaining valuable experience of the professional world and making them particularly attractive to employers.
Aston University is dedicated to widening participation in Higher Education through its work in schools throughout Birmingham. The Outreach and Widening Participation Office runs a number of outreach programmes providing opportunities for Aston University students to engage with local schools and the local community.
At Aston all students from any background, including areas where participation in Higher Education is low, those with non-traditional qualifications, those with disabilities, or from lower socio-economic groups, find the best opportunities for learning and success.
The University seeks to widen participation whilst maintaining high entry standards, to perform well against its WP performance indicators and fulfil its Access Agreement, to ensure a high quality learning experience for all its students, and to maintain its excellent employment record.
At Aston we recognise and welcome the important academic contribution and cultural diversity that international students will bring to the University environment and have representation of just over 85 countries at the University.
The tuition fee for full-time Degree Programmes at Aston is %3070 per year (2007 entry). Aston bursaries are available up to %750 to UK students, in addition to the government maintenance grant, dependent on family income. The tuition fees for study placement years and work placement years will be %1,535. If you are on placement you will receive an Aston Placement Allowance of %1,000. If you are on an unpaid placement or placement outside the UK (eg Year Abroad) you will receive an additional Aston Placement Bursary of %500 (%1,500 in total). Aston also offers Subject Specific Awards of £750 per year in one of a number of our subject areas of regional or national importance. Aston's Tuition Fee and Financial Support Policy aims to be simple, fair and straightforward and the University will continue to invest tuition fee income in the provision of high quality student facilities, teaching excellence and the overall student experience at Aston.
